Sydney Airport to City 2026: Train Fee, $60 Taxi Cap, Buses

Sydney Airport is one of the closest major airports to its city, 8 km from the CBD, and the train takes 13 minutes. The catch is the price. The Airport Link train reaches Central in 13 minutes but adds a station access fee of AUD 17.34 to the fare at the airport stations; Mascot station, one stop away and beside several hotels in this guide, has no fee, taxis from the airport ranks to the CBD are capped at AUD 60, and the 420 bus serves both terminals for an ordinary fare. The Airport Link train

International Airport station is under Terminal 1 and Domestic Airport station is between T2 and T3, both on the T8 Airport and South Line. Trains run about every 10 minutes from around 5 am to midnight, take two minutes between the two airport stations, 13 minutes from T1 to Central and about 20 to Circular Quay, and tap on and off with an Opal card or a contactless bank card or phone. The station access fee, AUD 17.34 for adults from July 2026 and rising each July, is deducted on top of the fare whenever you tap on or off at an airport station, so a single trip to the city costs around AUD 20 to 22 and a return about AUD 40 to 44. The fee has a separate weekly cap for frequent users, and the two-minute hop between the terminals is charged at a reduced inter-terminal rate rather than the full fee.

Mascot station and the fee-free routes

Mascot station is the next stop towards the city, and it has no access fee. From the domestic terminals it is a 10 to 15 minute walk along Ross Smith Avenue and O’Riordan Street, or a five-minute taxi, and from there the ordinary fare to Central is a few dollars. The Pullman, Stamford Plaza, Travelodge, Citadines Connect and ibis budget are all within a 5 to 15 minute walk of Mascot station, which is why a Mascot hotel plus the train is the cheapest way into town. Wolli Creek station, 12 to 15 minutes’ walk from the Novotel, is fee-free as well. The 420 bus links both terminals with Mascot, Rockdale and Eastgardens, and the 350 serves T1 and the domestic terminals from Bondi Junction via Mascot, both at normal Opal fares and both at the bus stops on the arrivals levels.

Taxis and the capped fare

Taxis wait at the ranks outside T1 arrivals and outside T2 and T3, with kerbside marshals at busy times. Since 3 November 2025, a trip from an airport rank to the CBD zone costs a flat AUD 60 for a standard taxi and AUD 80 for a maxi taxi, tolls included, which ends the old argument about routes. Other destinations are metered: count AUD 25 to 35 to the Mascot hotels from T1, AUD 10 to 15 from the domestic terminals, and AUD 20 to 30 to the Novotel from the domestic side. The drive to the CBD takes 20 to 30 minutes, more between 4 and 6:30 pm.

Rideshare

Uber, DiDi and Ola pick up at the Priority Pick-up Zones: at T1 on the arrivals level outside the terminal, and at the domestic terminals from the zone between T2 and T3, with Uber’s own kerbside pick-up outside T3 arrivals. Follow the rideshare signs, walk to the zone, then request the car. A ride to the CBD usually costs AUD 35 to 55, with surge pricing on Friday and Saturday nights and after large arrivals; to the Mascot hotels it is AUD 10 to 20. Rideshare to the terminals from the hotels is the easiest transfer at 4 am, when the hotel shuttles have not started.

Shuttles and hotel transfers

The Sydney Super Shuttle links the airport with most Mascot and Wolli Creek hotels for about AUD 12 to 15 per person on a timetable, picking up at Bay 12 outside T1 and at the shuttle bays between T2 and T3; the Travelodge’s own hotel-to-airport run is free for its guests, and the Rydges is across the road from T1. Choosing by situation

One or two travellers with light bags: the train, and pay the fee for the 13-minute ride, or walk to Mascot if you are staying there anyway. Three or four people, or heavy bags: the AUD 60 capped taxi from the rank is cheaper than three train fares plus fees. Overnight: trains stop around midnight and restart around 5 am, so an arrival after 11:30 pm means a taxi, or a night at the Rydges or the Aerotel at Terminal 1 and the train in the morning.
