Sleeping in Sydney Airport: Why You Cannot, What Happens at 11 pm, and the Hotel Inside Terminal 1
Sydney is one of the few big airports where the answer to “can I sleep in the terminal” is simply no. Aircraft cannot move between 11 pm and 6 am under the curfew, the terminals close after the last flights and reopen at about 2:30 am for T1 and 4 am for T2 and T3, sleeping inside is not permitted, and the only bed at the airport is the 15-room Aerotel inside Terminal 1. The curfew and the closure
The curfew has applied since 1995: no take-offs or landings between 11 pm and 6 am, with a small quota of quiet freighters and emergencies. The last arrivals land before 11 pm, the last departures leave just before it, and the terminals empty and close soon after. T1 reopens at about 2:30 am for the first international check-ins, T2 and T3 at about 4 am for the domestic first wave, and check-in for the 6 am departures opens two to three hours before. Between closing and reopening the airport asks passengers to leave, and security staff move on anyone who tries to bed down.
The overnight waiting area
Passengers holding a boarding pass for a flight the next morning may be shown to a seated waiting area near the T1 train station entrance, on the arrivals level, where they can sit until the terminal reopens. It is a concession, not a service: metal seating, no blankets, cold from May to September, and access can be refused when the area is full or the airport decides otherwise. Travellers arriving late without a next-day ticket, and anyone landing after the last train, are expected to take a taxi or a hotel. Treat the waiting area as a fallback, not a plan.
The hotel inside Terminal 1
The Aerotel Sydney is on the arrivals level of T1, outside the restricted area, one floor below international check-in. Its 15 rooms are sold by the hour and for the night, each with a bed, a shower and free Wi-Fi, and the Plaza Premium arrivals lounge at its door serves food and drinks. While the terminal is open you walk in from the arrivals hall; during the closure you ring the bell at the Aerotel entrance on the forecourt outside T1, opposite the taxi rank. For an arrival at 10:45 pm and a departure at 6 am it is the only option that involves no road at all. It cannot be reached from airside, so transit passengers without a visa still clear immigration to use it, and it takes couples at most.
Hotels across the road and a train stop away
The Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel is directly opposite T1, a three-minute walk, with a 24-hour reception, self-check-in kiosks and 24-hour room service, so a 1 am check-in and a 4:30 am walk back to check-in are routine there. For the domestic terminals, the ibis budget is a 10-minute walk from the Domestic Airport station, the Travelodge has a free shuttle from 4:30 am, and the Pullman and Stamford Plaza are five to ten minutes by taxi; all have 24-hour desks. The Novotel at Wolli Creek is five minutes by taxi from T1. Taxis and rideshare run all night from the ranks.
What is open overnight
Very little. The train’s last services leave the airport around midnight and the first arrive around 5 am; the T-Bus starts at 5:30 am. Cafes, shops and lounges close with the terminals, and the vending machines are behind the closed doors. The Aerotel’s lounge serves guests through the night, and the hotels’ room service, the Rydges’ 24-hour in-room dining and the Citadines Connect’s 24-hour food shop cover a late meal. A 24-hour convenience store and fuel station are on the main road through Mascot, a short taxi ride away.
Planning the 6 am departure
If you land in the evening and fly at 6 am, book a bed rather than a bench: the Aerotel for a solo traveller or couple who want zero transfer, the Rydges for a full room by T1, the Mascot hotels for a domestic first wave. Check-in for 6 am international flights opens at about 3 am, and the domestic queues at 4:30 am are the longest of the day, so leave the hotel by 4 am for T1 and 4:30 am for T2 and T3.
