A long daytime gap at Sydney is common: an overnight flight from Asia or the Gulf lands at 6 am and the domestic connection or the cruise check-in is at 3 pm, or an evening departure follows a morning check-out. Hourly rooms inside Terminal 1

The Aerotel Sydney is on the arrivals level of T1, landside, one floor below international check-in, and its 15 rooms are booked in hourly blocks as well as overnight. Each has a bed, an ensuite shower, free Wi-Fi and a wake-up call, and the Plaza Premium arrivals lounge at its door serves breakfast until noon and hot dishes until 6 pm. For an overnight arrival with a mid-afternoon connection it is the simplest answer at the airport: clear immigration, sleep, shower, go upstairs. The rooms take one or two adults, so a family needs two rooms or one of the hotels below.

Day-use rooms in Mascot

The Pullman Sydney Airport sells day-use rooms for the hours between flights at a rate below its overnight price, with the 24-hour Fit Lounge gym, the Mobius Bar and Grill and a full-size room with a rain shower. Mascot station is a seven-minute walk and one train stop from the domestic terminals, so the round trip costs about 30 minutes each way including the station fee, and the Sydney Super Shuttle or a taxi does it in ten. Availability depends on the day, so book ahead rather than turning up at 7 am.

Early check-in and late check-out

Every hotel in this guide will store luggage and let you check in early or leave late when a room is free, and for a gap of eight hours or more it is often cheaper to book the night and use it as a day. The Rydges across the road from T1 has self-check-in kiosks and 24-hour room service and is the natural choice after an overnight arrival at T1; the Novotel at Wolli Creek is five minutes by taxi from T1 with a 5:30 am breakfast; the Stamford Plaza adds an outdoor pool for a family with a day to fill. Showers and lounges

The Plaza Premium Lounge Arrivals, at the Aerotel’s door on the T1 arrivals level, sells showers to arriving passengers who are not staying in the hotel. Airside at T1, the Plaza Premium Lounge and The House by Aspire sell entry from around AUD 60 to 80 for a few hours, cheaper prebooked, with showers, buffet food, drinks and Wi-Fi, and accept Priority Pass; the domestic terminals have the airline lounges and the Rex Lounge at T2. Hour by hour

Up to three hours: stay airside at T1 in a lounge, or a coffee and a shower at the arrivals lounge. Three to six hours: an Aerotel block if you want to lie down, a lounge if you do not. Six to ten hours: an Aerotel block or a Pullman day-use room, or the Stamford’s pool for a family. Ten hours or more, or a night arrival: book a night at the Rydges or in Mascot and check in early. The curfew shapes the arithmetic: the last arrivals land before 11 pm and the first departures leave at 6 am, so the “night” between an evening arrival and a morning flight is at most seven hours, and it is worth a bed.

Aerotel blocks and Pullman day-use rooms sell out on days with long international arrival banks, so book them as soon as the flights are fixed. The station access fee applies to each tap at the airport stations, which adds about AUD 17 each way to a day room in Mascot reached by train; the Super Shuttle at AUD 12 to 15 or a AUD 15 taxi is usually cheaper for one person and always for two.
